CUMBERLAND COUNTY CRIME STOPPERS TO BE REACTIVATED
CARLISLE -- Plans to reactivate the Cumberland County Crime Stoppers program will be announced Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 1:30 p.m., at a news conference on the steps of the Old County Courthouse in Carlisle. Long time Cumberland County residents Bruce Barclay and Gary Eichelberger have been instrumental in generating interest throughout the County in reactivating the Crime Stoppers Program. Barclay and Eichelberger hope to have the program up and running in the very near future. Interested citizens and businesses may contact Barclay or Eichelberger with questions concerning the program.
“Community leaders and citizens of Cumberland County recognize the need for a Crime Stoppers program,” said Peggy N. Severine, coordinator for Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers. “Police departments throughout the county welcome the investigative tool that Crime Stoppers provides to them.”
Crime Stoppers programs are nonprofit, volunteer organizations of local citizens and business people dedicated to the reduction of crime, to the prompt solution of crimes, and to rewarding persons who provide information that leads to the arrest of criminals.
The programs supply information on fugitives and unsolved crimes to newspapers and radio and television stations for publication and broadcast. Citizens with information about the fugitives or crimes call a toll-free number and provide information anonymously. If the information leads to an arrest, the informant can claim a reward of up to $2,000.
Severine said the toll-free citizen tip-line number will be announced shortly.
“Thanks to Crime Stoppers, every Pennsylvanian has the opportunity to help the police catch criminals and protect the public,” said Gov. Edward G. Rendell.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller also endorsed Crime Stoppers. “Police across the state benefit from the information provided through Crime Stopper programs,” he said.
Crime Stoppers are funded through contributions from service organizations, social clubs, business persons, corporations and interested citizens, and through fund-raising events.
Crime Stoppers International reports that from the inception of the program in 1983 through Sept. 27 of this year, tips provided to Crime Stoppers Worldwide have resulted in the following:
