GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS JANUARY AS CRIME STOPPERS MONTH

(Jan. 8, 2002) -- Pennsylvania Gov. Mark S. Schweiker has proclaimed January as Crime Stoppers Month in Pennsylvania.

"Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers has proven to be a positive force in bringing business, residents and police together in the fight against crime and for public safety," Gov. Schweiker said in his proclamation.

Since its inception in 1986, Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers and its 29 related county and regional organizations have helped solve more than 7,200 cases, produced more than 5,000 arrests and paid out more than $510,000 in rewards.

Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization dedicated to solving crimes. The program supplies information on unsolved crimes and fugitives to the media for publication and broadcast. The program also provides rewards of up to $2,000 for information resulting in an arrest.

Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers offers a toll-free telephone number, 1-800-4PA-TIPS (1-800-472-8477), that citizens can call to report information about crimes or fugitives. Callers can remain anonymous.

"Crime Stoppers is one of the most effective and efficient programs available to assist police in the fight against crime," said Peggy Severine, State Coordinator for Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers. "It is truly a remarkable program."
