UPDATED JUNE 7,
2001 Norman Gerald James Male/Black Last Known Address: 343D Schley St., Newark NJ
Suspect # 2 On May 22, 2001 at 10:55 P.M., Trooper Margaret Shirley of the
Pennsylvania State Police, Troop N, Fern Ridge stopped to assist two black
males with a disabled red Suzuki GSX motorcycle. While at the scene,
Trooper Shirley was assaulted and had her service pistol taken from her.
She was then forced to relinquish her portable radio; the two males fled
the scene in her marked State Police Vehicle westbound on Interstate-80.
Trooper Shirley observed them backtrack east on Interstate-80 and, with
the aid of a passing motorist, the State Police at Fern Ridge were
notified of what had happened. The State Police vehicle was subsequently
discovered abandoned at the on ramp for SR-380 at the junction in Jackson
Township, Monroe County Pennsylvania. The State Vehicle had been involved
in an accident with the guardrail at that area and the suspects had fled
in an unknown direction. Subsequent investigation revealed that the
motorcycle was stolen from Jersey City, New Jersey. The investigation has revealed that James Burt, a Truck Driver came upon the wrecked State Police vehicle and offered assistance to the pair. Mr. Burt was then car-jacked by the two accused. It is alleged that the pair forced Burt to drive them to the Clinton Overpass on I-78, Essex County, NJ where he was shot and killed. Charges have been filed for the assault on Tpr. Shirley - Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Recklessly Endangering, Theft and related crimes. The New Jersey State Police and Essex County Prosecutors, New Jersey have filed a charge of Homicide for the killing of Mr. Burt. ![]() What You Can Do:
