The Pennsylvania State Police, Fire Marshall Division, continue their investigation into a
Fatal Fire that claimed the lives of seven (7) people in Lycoming County on May 23, 1974.
At approximately 3:10 a.m., a fire broke out in a two story dwelling at 142 East Street,
in the City of Williamsport. This fire resulted in the deaths of Ellen Mae Ryan age 37,
Robert Carson age 38, and five(5) children ranging from three to six years of age.
The cause of the fire was initially determined to be accidental, however, investigators
state that recent information indicates the possibility that the fire was intentionally
set. The residence had been the scene of loud party on the night of the fire, but it had
been dispersed by authorities, prior to the discovery of the fire. It is believed that
information regarding the fire or activity at the party may have been withheld at the time
